More waterspouts on St. George Island - no damage
08/19/08

As I was enjoying dinner tonight at a friend's home on the beachfront on St. George Island, weather started moving in over the gulf with dark swirling clouds, and some very loud lightning. We kept watching, and saw a funnel cloud forming, a thin cone reaching down, a little at a time. We then noticed the water kicking up in a wide spray where the funnel cloud was touching the surface - wow. We watched for a while, and saw two other funnel clouds, for a total of 3 out over the gulf.
No, of course I didn't have my camera. One of my friends did, though, and she has promised copies of the pictures - I will post them as soon as I have them.
And yes, we did discuss among ourselves which room we were going to move to if the waterspouts seemed to be coming our way, and who was going to carry the children, etc. Thankfully we did not have to get too serious about our plan.
I heard from another friend that they saw a small waterspout over the bay on St. George Island as well - they could see the rotation in the surface of the water, they were so close.
Anyway, no damage, and nothing made landfall that I heard about - just a combination of a front moving through and warm waters. It was a really spectacular sight to witness.
Here's hoping that tropical storm Fay brings us some nice rain, and keeps the strong winds to a minimum as she comes through later this week....
